Does Stucco go on before or after I install windows?
I've just finished walling up my former porch, when I'm done it'll be another room in our house. I framed it up with studs and built the rough openings for (4) windows, I already tested a window in the opening I made & it fits perfectly with about a 1/2" extra on all sides. I then screwed on plywood to the outside. Tomorrow I'll cut out the windows & Tyvek it in preparation for having a contractor come and give me a qoute for applying stucco to the outside.
So here's my question, do the windows go in before the stucco is applied, or do I wait until the stucco has been applied to install the windows?
Answer: Stucco goes on after the windows are installed.
But make sure you install a full layer of flashing all around the window to prevent any moisture from getting behind the window and leaking inside or rotting your wall framing.
Inexpensive flashing is about 6" wide, made of asphalt saturated kraft paper. Highest quality flashing is made from bituthane, foil-coated on one side with a peel-and-stick adhesive on the other side. Some people use 15 lb roofing felt.
In any case, cut two strips 12" wider than the window width, and two strips about 12" longer than the window height. Lay the first strip under the bottom of the window, covering the window flange and your plywood siding. Then install the two side pieces over the window sides, covering the bottom flashing strip, and the side flanges. Finally, install the top pieces, covering the tops of the two side strips and top flange. If you use the kraft paper or asphalt felt flashing, install with staples.
Then install your Tyvek over the flashing, and your are ready for the stucco contractor. You will have a weather-tight window with this method.
